Section Editor, Social Media Journal CHEST

 

Role Summary:

The Section Editor for Social Media is a volunteer position appointed by the Editor in Chief of CHEST reporting to the Web and Multimedia Editor to assist in engaging and expanding the CHEST audience through various social media outlets. Working with the Journal and Social Media Team, and the Web and Multimedia Editor, the Section Editor is a content expert who reviews articles forthcoming in CHEST, helping to identify articles that are likely to spark conversation. Though the Social Media Team will be responsible for posting messages, the Section Editor will identify articles that are likely to spark discussion and aid in crafting attention-getting messages and questions that go beyond just highlighting an article toward eliciting comments and other questions from the audience.

Goals of Social Media Activities:

  • Educate the physicians on what is being published in the journal CHEST
  • Increase recognition of the journal among physicians and other healthcare professionals/providers
  • Increase engagement among existing and potential members

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Review the table of contents related to forthcoming issues of CHEST to identify articles of interest on a monthly basis. Section Editor is then responsible for drafting monthly posts. Social Media Specialist is responsible for sending posts through editing and posting to CHEST social media platforms.
  • Read the selected articles and those identified by the Editor in Chief, Assistant Editor, and Web and Multimedia Editor as Newsworthy and work with the Social Media Specialist to generate potential ideas for social media posts, such as questions to pose, comments, or photos. Write a regular Thought-Leader Blog on “Hot in CHEST” that focuses on key articles and issues in CHEST.
  • Listen to CHEST podcasts to generate additional ideas.
  • Review social media posts drafted by the Social Media Specialist to ensure content relevance as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Specialist to craft responses to user comments and remarks as needed.
  • Work with the Web and Multimedia Editor, the Journal team, and CHEST staff on the continued development and expansion of CHEST's social media strategy.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be comfortable with the use of social media and have a personal presence/voice on various outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Must be willing to commit time weekly to this activity.
  • Should be an avid reader of medical literature, have published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, have been a high-quality reviewer for CHEST in the past, and have an understanding of journal publishing.
