Join the CHEST Value-Setting Work Group

As CHEST positions itself to more intentionally and visibly engage in a wide variety of advocacy, community engagement, equity, and inclusion efforts, the need to identify a set of values that is pertinent to the CHEST of 2023 and can act as an aspirational guide for the CHEST of the future has emerged. Clearly identifying and expressing a set of CHEST values will support a greater sense of transparency for members, as well as employees, by eliminating the ambiguity around what characteristics or qualities are expected and important for anyone involved in the CHEST community. Additionally, identifying a clear set of values will help guide business diversity decisions, set expectations for employment and membership, facilitate deeper engagement with values aligned with community partnerships, and support difficult decisions around when to take action (and what kind of action to take) and when to yield.

About the Work Group

The Value-Setting Work Group (Work Group) will lead the process of developing our shared CHEST values. The anticipated date of Work Group completion is August 2023. Working collaboratively to ensure that all perspectives are accurately and meaningfully represented, the Work Group will synthesize information and ideas gathered in the process of focused conversations.

Expectations for Work Group Members

Under the guidance of the Work Group co-chairs, Work Group members will:
  • Engage in a comprehensive review of previous CHEST strategic planning documents, as well as future goals in order to gain a firm grasp on the direction of the values.
  • Identify characteristics and qualities that are essential for creating a global CHEST community that is inspirational, as well as aspirational.
  • Work collaboratively with the other members of the Work Group to identify where we are and where we want to go.
  • Review information from a series of focus groups to ensure that a wide variety of perspectives are represented in the process.
  • Actively contribute to multiple rounds of drafting, editing, and revising value statements.
  • Amplify the perspectives of members of the CHEST community who are not in the room.
  • Be a values champion amongst peers and colleagues.
