Submission types 

Submissions will be considered for either oral, rapid-fire, or poster presentations. The final determination of the presentation format is at the discretion of the Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee or the Training and Transitions Committee. Formats will not be changed at the request of submitters or presenters. 


Scientific Abstracts (Original Investigations):
Open to all health care professionals, both domestic and international. 

Late-Breaking Abstracts (Original Investigations): Submissions will be accepted July 20–August 12, 2026. Data for all submissions must be new and not available at the time of general submission to qualify as a late-breaking abstract. Case reports and meta-analyses will not be considered as late-breaking abstracts. 

Fellow Case Reports: Open only to those enrolled in a physician training program, both domestic and international 

Medical Student/Resident Case Reports: Open only to current medical students or residents, both domestic and international. 

Health Care Practitioner Case Reports: Open to all domestic health care practitioners, such as nurses, therapists, and technicians. 

Global Case Reports: Open to all health care professionals from outside the United States. 

Clinical Case Puzzlers: Clinical case puzzlers highlight an interesting teaching point in chest radiology for oral presentation. The session chair will facilitate group participation, and a panel of experts will offer feedback in a consultation format. Open to all health care professionals, both domestic and international. Clinical Case Puzzlers are not published on the journal website.


Presentation awards  

Scientific abstract presenters are considered for awards if they apply for them upon submission. All oral and rapid-fire case report presenters are considered for awards during the sessions. Presenters are evaluated based on their written abstract and in-person presentation. All award notifications will be sent a few weeks after CHEST 2026 ends. 


Scientific abstract awards

Scientific abstract submitters must apply for awards when submitting the abstract. Applying for awards means the abstract will be considered for semifinalist nominations. The Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee will select semifinalists for all awards. Session moderators will judge and evaluate in-person presentations.

Alfred Soffer Research Award

This award is named in honor of Alfred Soffer, MD, Master FCCP, who was Editor-in-Chief of the journal CHEST® from 1968 to 1993 and Executive Director of CHEST from 1969 to 1992. Awarded to two finalists. 

Young Investigator Award

Investigators enrolled in a training or fellowship program or who have completed a fellowship program within five years before CHEST 2026 are eligible for Young Investigator Awards. Awarded to two finalists. 

Top Rapid-Fire Scientific Abstract Awards

Awarded to two finalists from all the rapid-fire sessions at the CHEST Annual Meeting for outstanding scientific research and presentation. 

Top Scientific Abstract Poster Award

Awarded to five finalists from all the poster sessions at the CHEST Annual Meeting for outstanding scientific research and presentation. 


Case report awards 

Oral and rapid-fire session moderators select the winner of each session based on the written abstract and verbal presentation.  Case report posters are not eligible for awards.

Top Case Report Award

Awards are granted to one presenter in each oral case report session at the CHEST Annual Meeting for an outstanding case report and presentation.

Top Rapid-Fire Case Report Award

Awards are granted to one presenter in each rapid-fire case report session at the CHEST Annual Meeting for an outstanding case report and presentation.

Call for reviewers and moderators 

Get involved with CHEST 2026 by reviewing original investigations and case reports submitted for presentation or moderating sessions at the annual meeting. This is a prime opportunity to review new research that could direct the future of clinical chest medicine and get involved in CHEST 2026.  

Reviewers

Review abstracts and case reports. Reviewers must have proficient knowledge in the content area(s) selected. Grading will take place from March 2 to March 25, 2026. Assignments will be emailed from abstracts@chestnet.org. Medical students, interns, and residents will not be considered as reviewers; we kindly ask that you not apply if you are in any of those individual status types.
Reviewers are also invited to serve as moderators for abstract and case report sessions at the Annual Meeting and will receive priority consideration. An email will be sent to all reviewers with a sign-up link to select sessions in mid-July. Reviewers are not required to moderate sessions if they cannot attend CHEST 2026.
